AKCIL ('Aunt Kisha Cares' Institute of Learning) is an Austin, TX, community-based program dedicated to enriching the lives of youths through enhancing their educational foundation, exposing them to culture and creative outlets of expression, and conveying the importance of community advocacy (and service) early on. The goal is to cultivate positive mentalities and grow adequate levels of self-esteem to develop a healthy self-image and attain individual life success.

Current Offerings:
FREE basic Spanish, basic American Sign Language, expressive writing, culture classes and reading assistance to youths between the ages of three to 15 years of age. Classes are offered on second Saturday’s at Windsor Park Branch Public Library (5833 Westminster Dr.; Austin, Texas 78723) and on fourth Saturday’s at the University Hills Branch Public Library (4721 Loyola Ln.; Austin, Texas 78723). ...class times may vary, so check back frequently or email me, Aunt Kisha ;), for times.

FREE Trip to Egypt?
Are you interested in taking a FREE trip to the “motherland” to learn more about your African ancestry? Well to make this happen, AKC has teamed up with a national organization, the D’zert Club (www.blackbusinessnetwork.com/dzertclub); AKC will be sponsoring a local chapter of the D'zert Club in order for us AUSTINITES to be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity that, in the past, has been made available only to those on the east coast because no one has stepped up to the plate to offer a program of this tremendous caliber in the south...until now!

In order to take advantage of this FREE trip, all you have to do is enroll in a knowledge-sharing program/workshop—which meets only once per month; brings high-profile African-American speakers to us locally to share their knowledge of our rich heritage; and offers four national, all-expense paid trips to different locals throughout the US! NO catch, no gimmicks, this is REAL TALK!

Contact me at your soonest availability if this sounds like something you, your kids, or someone you know would be interested in (512-589-7073). The program is open to African-Americans or kids of any African descent age 7 to 14 and adults who are willing to serve as chaperones….we (McKalex and I) have already enrolled and will be starting in March! Enrollment ends March 1, 2010, so get moving, don’t sleep on this opportunity…you’ll be kickin’ yourself over it in the future if you do!

Determined to provide a little comfort and show our care to our fellowman this holiday season, AKCIL has launched operation "MUGS, GLOVES & SOCKS: Warming bodies to warm Hearts..." We are collecting winter hats (beenies), gloves, and socks to donate to local shelters and community centers throughout Austin on Christmas Day! We have "special guests" attending, the Stony Point Sign Language Class, so please come out ready to show your stuff. I've told them my students are quick, apt, and know the language! It's going to be fun...we're going to play games and learn some new signs, as well as some information about taking sign in school for school credit! See ya'll then.
